The German midfielder made 15 appearances for Guardiola's side before damagaing his knee ligaments in December, which subsequently ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
When asked about the trophyless campaign, Gundogan told 'ESPN FC', 'honestly, we suffered last season, everything was new for Pep, for the new players like me, maybe for the others as well to understand the idea of Pep's style.'
'The adaptation doesn't come in a few weeks or just in one moment, but I think that the dominant football that we are playing is the right way. We controlled a lot of games last season in the Premier League, maybe 95 per cent of all the games we played.'
'It felt a little bit unfair sometimes, to play the game [for] 90 minutes, to put a lot of effort into the game, to create chances, to play really well — so we always had the feeling after the game that we did the right thing.'
'And at the end, there was just a lack of concentration for a moment, one individual mistake, and that's why we lost sometimes two points, sometimes even three points. That just showed us how much we need to work on the small details, especially defensively.'
City have spent more than £200m in the current transfer window in an attempt to reduce their defensive errors for the 2017/18 campaign. Guardiola's men are favourites to win the Premier League this season but Gundogan believes rivals Manchester United are also well equipped to challenge for the title.
'United did a good job by signing (Romelu) Lukaku. They have a good team - a young team as well. They are strong, really physical, so they seem to be better than last year.'
'Chelsea [also] just signed a new striker, which I really like.'
'Liverpool as well as a team - especially with (Jurgen) Klopp - who I also really like. They have a lot of potential. A great team and is also playing a different style of football. [They're] really difficult to control.'
'It's obvious who the big teams in England are and who are the competitors for the Premier League title.'
