According to Spanish authorities, Alonso owes €2 million euros to the taxman for income earned in his days at Real Madrid on image rights. The Spaniard himself claims he is in the clear.
Alonso now joins a long list of La Liga stars who have been accused of defrauding the tax office including Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Both men avoided jail-terms.
Having come through the ranks at Real Sociedad, the midfielder moved to Anfield where he made his name. Alonso then secured a 'Galáctico' transfer to Real Madrid where he enjoyed the majority of his playing days. He retired last year after a successful spell at Bayern Munich.
Whilst it remains unlikely the Spaniard will be locked up, this accusation highlights a concerning trend of tax evasion from football's role-models.
