Colombia were leading 1-0 against Peru with just 15 minutes to go in their final qualifying game on Wednesday morning, a result that would have seen 'La Roja' advance to an Inter-Confederation play-off with New Zealand during the next international break.
At that point though, Peru were awarded an indirect free-kick on the edge of the box. As is the case in such a situation the big men trundled forward looking to attack a cross, but Paolo Guerrero had something different in mind.
The former Bayern Munich man curled the ball around the wall and into the net with the lightest of touches off Ospina in the Colombia goal on the way in.
According to the rulebook, an indirect free kick must touch another player before going in if it is to count, meaning that in attempting to save the ball, Ospina had actually cost his team a goal and in doing so, ended Arsenal team-mate Alexis Sanchez's World Cup dream.
Whilst controversial at first glace, it showed an excellent piece of refereeing by the man in black.
The point was enough for Peru to keep their hopes of a trip to Russia alive, with just New Zealand standing in their way.
